Leaders at a homeless shelter want to help families who might be struggling to provide food while their children are on the holiday break from school.
Rick Denny, president and CEO of the Jesus House, said the shelter will hold a Winter Break Grocery Box Giveaway from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 1335 W Sheridan.
Denny said the grocery boxes were donated to the shelter before Christmas, and the donor and shelter leaders decided it would be helpful to have a food distribution for families whose budgets are stretched thin during the holiday break.
Some low-income families struggle more than usual to make ends meet when children are home from school due to the cost of buying more groceries during the break, Denny said.
“We thought that the end of Christmas week would be a good time to distribute these boxes,” he said Friday.
He said students in the Oklahoma City district have been on break since Dec. 18 and won't return to classes until Jan. 6.
“Children who are on free and reduced lunch can't get the lunch because that was a need being met while the child was at school,” Denny said. “While these food supplies may not provide all of the meals needed for all of those days, it will certainly help these families bridge the gap in feeding their children while school is out.”
