Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops: Redshirt freshman Zack Sanchez remains starter at cornerback over Cortez Johnson

NORMAN — Throughout the spring, summer and fall, Oklahoma coaches have said sophomore Cortez Johnson was working as a starting cornerback opposite Aaron Colvin.

But Johnson was suspended for the Sooners’ season-opening 34-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe last weekend, and redshirt freshman Zack Sanchez started in his place.

Sanchez played well Saturday. So well, Stoops said, that for now, he remains the starter.

“It’s been tight all along anyways,” Stoops said Monday. “Zack’s played really well. Exciting to see him playing like that.”

Johnson transferred from Arizona after his true freshman season in 2011 and sat out last year, per NCAA rules. His suspension stems from an arrest in December 2012, when Johnson and receiver Jalen Saunders were pulled over and found to be in possession of marijuana.

Charges against Saunders were later dropped.

Also suspended for the opener was junior defensive tackle Chuka Ndulue. He was arrested on a DUI complaint this summer.

“He’ll have to earn his way on the field,” Stoops said.

Ndulue started 10 games last year at defensive end and switched to tackle before spring practices began.
