Corrections Board plays name game

The state Board of Corrections voted Thursday to rename Oklahoma City's Hillside Community Corrections Center as the Kate Barnard Community Corrections Center to honor the state's first commissioner of charities and corrections.

The board also voted to name the center's meeting room the Ted R. Logan Meeting Center to honor Logan, a former Corrections Department board member and the state's first black prison warden. The center is at 3300 N Martin Luther King Ave.

The old Kate Barnard Community Corrections Center at 3200 NW 39th St. in Oklahoma City has been vacated by the Department of Corrections because of its dilapidated condition, a department spokesman said. Barnard, who died in 1930, was elected commissioner of charities and corrections in 1907. She is credited with helping create the Department of Mental Health, Department of Human Services and Corrections Department.

Logan is credited with huge improvements in state correctional facilities for women. “To have a building named after me is great,” he told the board. “I will remember it always. My family will remember it always.”

The board named James A. Kroth as the state's 2012 Correctional Officer of the Year and James A. Nall as its 2012 Correctional Officer Supervisor of the Year.
