Country radio station KKNG has laid off three veteran on-air personalities and is shifting frequencies to lower power FM 97.3. A new format will debut next week at its former FM 93.3 frequency, Tyler Media President Ty Tyler said Tuesday.

KKNG is replacing KOJK-FM 97.3 ("Jack FM”), a variety adult hits station that debuted in March 2006. KKNG will be simulcast at 93.3 until the new format debuts, Tyler said. He declined to comment on the new format.

On Monday, KKNG laid off Bill Thomas and KC Sheperd from the morning show and afternoon personality James Ayers. Lynn Waggoner will continue as morning show host of the station, which will emphasize "traditional country,” Tyler said.

After last reigning as Oklahoma City’s No. 1 station in fall 2005, KKNG has been gradually losing the country battle to Clear Channel Communication stations KTST-FM 101.9 and KXXY-FM 96.1.

In recent years, KKNG laid off its news team and began playing more contemporary songs. KXXY even began billing itself as "Oklahoma City’s only classic country station.”
