Instincts of an Oklahoma County Sheriff's deputy patrolling in the Deer Creek area led to the breakup of a burglary and drug ring involving at least nine people, Sheriff John Whetsel said Tuesday.

Six people were in custody and three more were being sought by deputies. Whetsel said he would present more than 100 felony complaints to the district attorney's office for prosecution, ranging from burglary and concealing stolen property to possession of a controlled dangerous substance and conspiracy.

Whetsel credited the bust to deputy Todd Bussell, who was on patrol Jan. 29 in the 4200 block of St. Croix Drive in the Deer Creek area when he spotted a car that made him suspicious.

The car was parked several feet from the curb with two women inside. The women were reclined in their seats as if they were trying to hide themselves, Bussell said.

When he began questioning the women, their stories did not add up, he said.

“I knew something was going on,” Bussell said. “All the indicators were there.”

Bussell spotted a rifle in the car, and one of the women told him it was stolen. The two women, Amiee Monholland, 21, and Nichole Reyes, 20, were arrested. One of them told Bussell a man, Chase Slaton, 22, had been dropped off to case potential burglary targets in the area.
