OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A state appeals court has rejected a request to overturn the murder conviction of man serving a 35-year prison sentence for the 2011 shooting death of another man at an Oklahoma City car wash.
The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals Tuesday upheld the conviction of 31-year-old Aornes Ali Smith. Smith pleaded no contest to the murder charge in the May 3, 2011, shooting death of 28-year-old Cecil Wayne Gregory III.
Smith was sentenced to life in prison with all but 35 years suspended.
Smith attempted to withdraw his plea, claiming he was coerced. The appeals court says there’s no evidence of coercion.
Smith’s attorney, Clayburn Curtis, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
