Police nab suspect in wreck, attempted vehicle thefts
An Oklahoma City man arrested Thursday is suspected of wrecking a stolen vehicle and attempting to steal several more by force, police said. Phillip Martin Smith, 54, was being held in the Oklahoma County jail Friday in lieu of $374,000 bail. Police said a man wrecked a stolen pickup just before 9 a.m. Thursday and then fled to a residence in the 2500 block of SW 28. The man attempted to rob a woman living at the home by pretending to stick a gun in her back. Police determined the item the man pressed into the woman's back was actually a cigarette lighter. The man demanded her car keys but fled once he learned she owned no vehicle. After unsuccessfully trying to steal a pickup from a woman he encountered on the street, the man went to another residence where he held a man at knifepoint and demanded his vehicle before police arrived and arrested him, officers said. Smith has a criminal record in Oklahoma, including earlier charges of burglary, robbery and shooting with intent to kill.
