Mom faces trafficking charges
A Sallisaw woman accused of trying to sell her two children to earn enough money to bail her boyfriend out of jail faces two counts of trafficking in children. Misty Nichole VanHorn, 22, was charged Monday in Sequoyah County District Court. She is jailed with bail set at $50,000. VanHorn is accused of trying to sell her 2-year-old daughter for $1,000 and her 10-month-old child for $3,000 to a woman in Fort Smith, Ark. VanHorn confessed to law enforcement officers she spoke to a friend about selling the children, but then changed her story saying she talked to the children's father about selling them to him, the affidavit states. VanHorn also confessed that she leaves the older child with a woman and that she doesn't know the neighbor's last name. The children were placed in state Department of Human Services custody.
