Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops on Thursday's practice: 'We looked like we wanted to go on spring break'

NORMAN — Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops wasn’t particularly thrilled with his players’ effort Thursday, when the Sooners held their last spring practice before a week off for spring break.

OU held a 50-play scrimmage to end Thursday’s practice, which Stoops said was “very generic. Very vanilla.”

“We look like we wanted to go to spring break today,” Stoops said with a laugh. “They were on spring break a little early today, but I remember when I was a junior in college, my thoughts were on things other than football the last day before spring break, so I certainly can see where they’re coming from.”

Stoops, though, said he’s been impressed for the most part with what he’s seen from the group.

“I notice a really good group of players that kinda come to work,” Stoops said. “It’s a really solid group of players, and I think they understand how good they can be. Now, are they willing to work every day to become that unit? That is where we’re at.”

The OU defense returns nine starters off last year’s unit, which was solid for most of the season.

Junior defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and senior nickelback Julian Wilson are both skipping spring practices while recovering from injuries.
