Both men are battling for the House District 30 seat, using their background to form their platforms.

Crowder, 60, D-Sapulpa, is challenging one-term incumbent McCullough, 41, R-Sapulpa.

Democrat focuses on schools
Crowder said his time as school superintendent will help guide his policy toward education in Oklahoma.

"Of course, the first topic of interest for me will be education,” he said. "My main purpose in that will be adequate and stable funding for education.”

Another major concern for Crowder is health care, especially for children, he said.

Also, he said he would like to see the state get better quality jobs, which he thinks can be achieved through a link with alternative fuel and energy sources.

Crowder said he will "put people ahead of politics” and serve his constituents.

Republican seeks criminal justice
McCullough also said his background has helped him focus on Oklahoma's needs, particularly in the criminal justice system.

He said he looks at what other states have done and tries to pass similar laws if they've worked elsewhere.

"I think there's a need for us to kind of step away from our emotions a little bit ... and look at the data,” he said. "I want to try to be thoughtful as I approach my decisions.”

Editor's note: Joe Crowder was mistakenly identified as Jim Crowder. And Mark McCullough is an attorney, not a former attorney.
