SAYRE, Okla. (AP) — Authorities say an Oklahoma deputy sheriff has shot and killed a Sayre man in Texas following a car chase that began in western Oklahoma.

Beckham County Sheriff Scott Jay says 36-year-old Eugene Arnold was killed Sunday in the shooting in Wheeler County, Texas.

The deputy's name was not released.

Jay says the deputy had responded to a report of threats being made when he first contacted Arnold. The sheriff says Arnold then drove away with the deputy pursuing him into neighboring Texas.

Jay says Arnold eventually stopped, then reportedly fought with the deputy and was shot during the struggle.

Jay says Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting and that the deputy is on administrative leave.

Beckham and Wheeler counties adjoin each other at the Oklahoma-Texas state line.
