MAPS meetings set

Community meetings are planned for upcoming renovations to two Oklahoma City elementary schools and construction of a new downtown elementary school. A $1.2 million gym will be built at West Nichols Hills Elementary, 8400 Greystone Ave. A meeting to discuss the location of the gym will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the school. West Nichols Hills opened in 1941 and has room for about 350 students in prekindergarten through sixth grade. It has received nearly $3 million in MAPS for Kids renovations. Four new classrooms and a gym are planned for Parmelee Elementary School, 6700 S Hudson. A meeting to discuss the $2.3 million construction project will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the school. Parmelee opened in 1966 and has room for about 750 students in prekindergarten through sixth grade. It has received nearly $7 million in MAPS for Kids upgrades. The last community meeting for the John W. Rex Elementary charter school in downtown Oklahoma City will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Civic Center Music Hall, 201 N Walker. Black History contest opens

The Oklahoma City Thunder is hosting its fifth annual Black History Heroes Challenge. The contest is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Students can enter essays, art, video or photography that depicts people significant to black history or important black people in their lives. Winners will be selected within five age groups. They will receive Thunder prize packs, which include tickets to the Feb. 27 home game against New Orleans. Some entries will be displayed at Chesapeake Energy Arena during that game. The deadline to enter is 5 p.m. Feb. 5, and all entries must be postmarked by Feb. 1. For more information or an entry form, go to thunder.nba.com.
