11 semifinalists announced
The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has named the semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, a recognition program for outstanding black high school seniors. Eleven Oklahoma students made the list. They are: Jourdan Brown, of Carl Albert High School in Midwest City; Ki-Jana Carter and Breanna Williams, of the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics; Ashley Daniel, of Chelsea High School; Teresa Emesiani, of Edmond North High School; Lotanna Ezenwa, of Bishop Kelley High School in Tulsa; Abrm McQuarters, of Cascia Hall in Tulsa; Ruth Key of Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City; Sitara Richter-Addo, of Norman High School; Jasmine Robinson, of Shawnee High School; and Rachel Stromberg, of Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa.
Grants aid veterans
Two Oklahoma colleges received grants from the U.S. Education Department for Veterans Upward Bound programs, which encourage veterans who are college students. East Central University in Ada won $275,153. Redlands Community College in El Reno won $250,000. The grant is designed to increase college attendance and graduation for low-income, first-generation veterans.
Autism study gets funding
The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center has received a $2.6 million research grant to help children with autism. The funds will be used to study classroom-based treatment intervention. The study will focus on 60 children ages 3 and 4 in a dozen classrooms in the Oklahoma City and Seattle areas. “We will teach children skills and behaviors that will enable them to interact successfully in the same settings with other children their age,” said Bonnie McBride, an associate professor of pediatrics at the OU College of Medicine and the winner of the grant. The grant comes from the National Center for Special Education Research, a division of the Institute for Education Sciences. McBride will team with her OU colleagues and researchers at the University of Washington.
