Kaiser Elementary meeting is set

A community meeting is planned to discuss upcoming MAPS construction project at Kaiser Elementary, 3101 Lyon Blvd. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the school. The $1.9 million project will add classrooms and a new gym at the northwest Oklahoma City school. The school was built in 1951 and already has received about $4.9 million in MAPS renovations. The school is designed to accommodate about 575 students in prekindergarten through sixth grade.

General honored

for aerospace event

An Oklahoma man has been honored by the Afterschool Alliance for his support of after school programs. Brig. Gen. Ben Robinson was one of 18 State Afterschool Champions selected nationwide. He was nominated by the Oklahoma Afterschool Network. Robinson helped establish the Aerospace Education and Industry Partnership Day in 2009 in partnership with the Oklahoma Aerospace Alliance. More than 100 educators and industry representatives attend to learn about how to teach students about careers in aerospace.

Braille contest set

More than 25 students who are blind or visually impaired are expected to compete Friday in the Oklahoma Regional Braille Challenge at the Oklahoma School for the Blind in Muskogee. The challenge is a national program of the Braille Institute of America and the only national academic competition for blind students in the country. Students ages 6 to 19 compete in categories such as reading comprehension and braille spelling. The top 60 students nationwide will qualify for the national competition in June. During the Oklahoma competition, teachers of students with visual impairments will have the chance to attend professional development. For more information, call (877) 229-7136.
