Rose State wins grant

— The Environmental Protection Agency awarded $200,000 to Rose State College to help train water plant operators. Program participants will learn about hazardous waste, water and wastewater treatment systems. The goal will be to help unemployed or underemployed workers get training and find jobs. Library wins Laura Bush grant

— A Norman elementary school received a $5,000 grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries. Kennedy Elementary will use the money to buy books that fill cultural gaps in the school's collection. The grant was one of about 200 awarded nationwide by the foundation, which supports the expansion of printed collections in school libraries.

School names new dean

A graduate of Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics has been named the school's new dean of students. Chris Shrock is taking over for Jack Gleason, who retired last month. Shrock previously worked as a humanities professor. He is a 2000 graduate of the school and is originally from Guymon.

OU honors former DHS head

— The former head of the state Department of Human Services was named to the University of Oklahoma's Anne and Henry Zarrow School of Social Work Hall of Fame. Howard Hendrick led DHS from 1998 to 2012. DHS is the largest state agency with nearly 7,000 employees and an annual operating budget of $2.2 billion. Before being named director, Hendrick served 12 years as a member of the state Senate, including two years as the Republican floor leader. Hendrick practiced business, real estate and tax law for 17 years before his selection as DHS director. He is a graduate of OU and Southern Nazarene University.
