Two former Oklahoma sheriffs who left office in disgrace were rejected by voters Tuesday in their efforts to regain their former posts.
Contentious sheriffs' races highlighted a busy election night for county officials around the state as hundreds of candidates for sheriff, county commissioner, court clerk and county clerk sought favor with voters.
Overall, it was a great day for incumbent county officer candidates Tuesday, as most either won re-election or made it into runoffs.
There were a few notable exceptions, however. Adair County Sheriff Austin Young, Grady County Sheriff Art Kell, Latimer County Sheriff Robert Brooks and Murray County Sheriff Darin Rogers all went down to defeat. Also defeated were Love County Commissioner Michael White and Sequoyah County Clerk Vicki Sawney, according to final, but unofficial, state Election Board returns.
Also rebuffed by voters Tuesday were former Woodward County Sheriff Les Morton, who was placed on probation in 2009 for embezzlement in office, and former Pawnee County Sheriff Roger Price, who was ousted in 2010 for willful neglect of duty.
Meanwhile, in the Delaware County sheriff's race, there will be a runoff between veteran law enforcement officers Harlan Moore and Mike Wilkerson for the chance to restore respectability to that sex-scandal plagued office.
Fifteen former female inmates reported being raped or sexually assaulted by members of the Delaware County sheriff's staff during the administration of former Sheriff Jay Blackfox.
Blackfox was never accused of any sexual wrongdoing, but people in that county will be paying a half-cent sales tax for 17 years to pay off a $13.5 million settlement of a civil rights lawsuit that arose from the scandal.
