Oklahoma Ethics Commission seeks exemption from payroll accounting law

Oklahoma Ethics Commission officials say it would cost the small agency nearly six times what it is paying now for another state office to perform its payroll and other accounting functions.

State Ethics Commission seeks exemption from accounting law

The state Ethics Commission is asking to be exempt from a state law that requires another agency perform its payroll and other accounting functions.

Executive Director Marilyn Hughes said the small agency is performing the duties now at a fraction of the cost it would be billed.

Hughes said one of the agency's six employees does payroll and other financial duties at an annual cost of about $2,800.

The state finance office has proposed a contract to do the same work for $12,000 a year, Hughes said.

“We're providing them, and we can't afford for somebody else to provide them,” Hughes said.

A state law passed last year aimed at consolidating state services requires the state finance office to perform payroll and other financial duties of most state agencies.

Smaller agencies are exempted, said Ron Jenkins, a state finance office spokesman.

The Ethics Commission, which will be down to five employees in June, has asked for an exemption, he said.
