Oklahoma families among first plaintiffs to win in Toyota suit

Two Oklahoma County families were actually the first plaintiffs to take Toyota Motor Corp. to court and win over alleged sudden-acceleration defects.

In October 2013, an Oklahoma County jury awarded $1.5 million in actual damages each to Jean Bookout, 82, of Yukon, and the family of the late Barbara Schwarz, 70, of Yukon, after finding that faulty electronic systems in Bookout’s 2005 Camry sedan caused it to accelerate out of control and crash.

The jury also found the company guilty of “reckless disregard” for the safety of others.
