Oklahoma, federal agencies target of anthrax hoax
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The FBI says an anthrax hoax that targeted federal government and Oklahoma state agencies was mailed by a state prison inmate.
The head of the FBI's Oklahoma City office, James Finch, said Friday that the U.S. attorney's office in Muskogee received a letter from the inmate on Wednesday that indicated a white powdery substance in the letter was anthrax.
FBI agents interviewed the prisoner and learned similar letters were sent to the FBI and U.S. Attorney offices in Oklahoma City, the Oklahoma Attorney Generals' Office and federal courts in Oklahoma City and Washington, D.C. Most letters were received on Thursday and tests for hazardous substances were negative.
An FBI spokesman did not immediately return a phone call for comment on what action may be taken against the unidentified inmate.
