"I don't think I'm going to get to see you again,” he told them. Not unless something changed — in a hurry — for the better.
Robinson, 60, of Oklahoma City, had left for work an hour early Monday because of the rain. He headed south on Interstate 35, but traffic barely was moving. On the radio, he could hear reports of one accident after another, then the news that the highway had been shut down.
It had taken him about 45 minutes to move a mile. He exited and got onto Hefner Road, heading east in the general direction of his Midwest City ophthalmology office. As he neared Sooner Road, the street vanished beneath some standing water.
His silver Lexus ES 330 was a low-profile car, but he sent it plunging into the pool anyway, feeling fortunate when it reached the far side and emerged.
"I'm not going to do that again,” he thought.
He stopped at the top of a bridge over the Deep Fork River, still on Hefner about an eighth of a mile from Sooner. The river had overflowed its banks. As he tried to decide what to do, a man pulled up beside him in a Ford Explorer, a relatively large sport utility vehicle. They started talking and watched as a woman in a white car tried to drive into the water; the current seized the car and spun it away.
