Oklahoma football: Blake Bell quickly earned the trust of Jay Boulware, his new position coach

NORMAN — Oklahoma tight ends coach Jay Boulware said he won’t put anyone on the field he doesn’t trust.

That’s why senior Blake Bell is atop the first official OU football depth chart at tight end this week, and is expected to start the Sooners’ season opener Saturday evening against Louisiana Tech.

“Every time I put a kid on the field — whether it’s special teams or tight end or any position I’m coaching — I’m telling you I trust you,” Boulware said. “Now it’s up to you to do the job. I’m telling you I have trust in you. You’re helping to feed my daughter.

“I show them that picture that’s in my office. I say, ‘See that little girl right there? When you step on the field for me, you’re telling me you’re helping feed her. I’m trusting you to help feed her.’”

Boulware said Bell’s vast knowledge of the OU offense — learned from years of playing quarterback — helped him pick up his new position so quickly, but also praised Bell’s willingness to learn.

“He’s a student of the game,” Boulware said. “The first day he walked into that meeting room … Blake walks in there with a notepad and a pencil. He’s ready to absorb like a sponge. That right there told me he’s serious about what he’s doing.”
