NORMAN — Blake Bell hasn’t played a single snap at tight end in his entire life.

Regardless, he was named to the preseason watch list for the 2014 John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding tight end, on Tuesday morning.

Joining Bell on the Mackey watch list is fellow Sooner tight end Taylor McNamara, a sophomore who only has one career reception.

Bell, a Wichita, Kan., native, started eight games at quarterback last season for the Sooners, but switched to tight end for his senior season after Trevor Knight’s MVP performance in the Sugar Bowl.

The senior was working out at tight end this spring until a sprained knee kept him out of April’s spring game.

The Mackey Award recipient will be announced Dec. 10, and presented live on Dec. 11 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. Semifinalists will be announced Nov. 17, and finalists will be announced a week later on Nov. 24.
