NORMAN — Defensive tackle Jordan Phillips was having a breakout season through four games in 2013 before a serious back injury forced him to miss the rest of the year.
He was granted a medical hardship waiver by the Big 12 Conference to get back that year, so he’s still considered a redshirt sophomore despite this being his fourth year on campus.
Although he’s medically cleared to practice, OU coaches took it easy with Phillips throughout fall camp. On days when the Sooners practiced twice, Phillips would sit out one of those sessions.
After Monday afternoon’s practice, coach Bob Stoops said Phillips is progressing well.
“We haven’t had any setbacks,” Stoops said. “He got maybe three series in different ways in the scrimmage and we pulled him out.
“Coach (Jerry) Montgomery has managed him well in the number of snaps he’s getting and getting him ready to play. He’s strong and powerful. You can tell he is getting his feel back.”
