Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops defends overall state of his program, says he feels good about its direction

NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops bristled when asked to assess the state of his program during Monday’s weekly news conference.

“Seven-and-two and working to the end of the year,” Stoops said. “Just co-champs a year ago, right? What else do you want to know? We won it in 2010 and tied it in 2012 and we’re going through ’13.

“I think there are only 4 or 5 teams that have won more games over the past five years. I believe that’s right. If that’s not the answer you are looking for, I’m not sure.

“It seems like every time you lose a game, it’s like ‘Oh geez, the sky is falling.’”

Asked if he feels good about the direction his program is heading, Stoops said, “I do. We have a lot of great young players that are coming up.”

The sky may not be falling, but Stoops’ program clearly isn’t as dominant as it once was. I wrote about that subject for Sunday’s newspaper. You can read that story here.

Here are some of the numbers supporting the theory, comparing the first 10 years of the Stoops era with the last five. There’s a five-year difference, but even if you double the production from 2009-13, the difference in many cases is staggering.
