Oklahoma football: Depth chart analysis
Here is Oklahoma football beat writer Jason Kersey's analysis of the Sooners' depth chart:
QUARTERBACKS
12, Landry Jones, Sr., 6-4, 218
10, Blake Bell, So., 6-6, 254
OR
15, Drew Allen, Jr., 6-5, 226
Quarterback analysis: Coach Bob Stoops still won't name Jones' backup, but Bell seems to have pulled ahead of Allen based on his performance in the spring game and the praise he's received for his play in scrimmages. Coaches continue to insist Bell's arm is better than some may think and that it is getting better.
RUNNING BACKS
8, Dominique Whaley, Sr., 5-11, 204
24, Brennan Clay, Jr., 5-11, 201
FB, 33, Trey Millard, Jr., 6-2, 256
48, Aaron Ripkowski, So., 6-1, 260
Running back analysis: Whaley's the man if he stays healthy. Roy Finch is working in the slot during practices, which may limit his touches out of the backfield. Junior-college transfer Damien Williams has impressed coaches, and Millard should get more carries this fall than he did last year.
RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS
WR, 19, Justin Brown, Sr., 6-3, 209
18, Lacoltan Bester, Jr., 6-3, 205
SL, 4, Kenny Stills, Jr., 6-1, 190
3, Sterling Shepard, Fr., 5-10, 188
WR, 17, Trey Metoyer, Fr., 6-1, 190
13, Durron Neal, Fr., 5-11, 201
TE, 85, Geneo Grissom, So., 6-4, 247
82, Brannon Green, Jr., 6-2, 250
Receiver analysis: The late additions of Brown and Bester bolstered a receiver corps that, while still relatively inexperienced, is no longer considered the team's weak link. Don't get too caught up in starters, they'll all see the field and get touches. Grissom, a converted defensive end, will start at tight end after an impressive fall camp. Green and true freshman Taylor McNamara will still contribute.
OFFENSIVE LINE
LT, Tyrus Thompson, So., 6-5, 303
Lane Johnson, Sr., 6-7, 303
LG, 74, Adam Shead, So., 6-4, 307
54, Nila Kasitati, RFr., 6-4, 309
C, 64, Gabe Ikard, Jr., 6-3, 288
56, Ty Darlington, Fr., 6-3, 266
RG, 68, Bronson Irwin, Jr., 6-5, 307
54, Nila Kasitati, RFr., 6-4, 309
RT, 79, Daryl Williams, Jr., 6-6, 299
72, Derek Farniok, So., 6-9, 325
Offensive line analysis: The Sooners' offensive line, once a clear team strength, is among the biggest question marks entering the 2012 season. Lane Johnson could still win back a starting spot, but he'll likely switch between left and right tackle in backup duty. The five starters and Johnson seem solid, the concern is now depth. One more injury to an interior lineman could be catastrophic.
