I got a note from Chuck Bowman today. Bowman, most people know, is the long-time director of Oklahoma’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also was a Sooner football player in the 1950s under Bud Wilkinson.
Here is Bowman’s note: “As you know, one of my Sooner teammates, Joe Rector, died a few weeks ago. I was honored to be part of his memorial service along with Jay Wilkinson and Norman Lamb. Joe was one of the good guys and one thing he did was to organize a quarterly luncheon for the old guys of our Sooner years. We were having 50-60 former players and friends attend an informal lunch time here in the city.
“Bob Burris, B.W. Scott and I are going to keep that lunch time alive. Just too much good food, fun and fellowship to let slip away. We will call it JOE’S LUNCH BUNCH. Our first lunch time after Joe’s passing will be next Wednesday, 11:30a.m., Willow Creek Country Club in south OKC. Merv Johnson is coming to give us a sneak preview of the 2013 Sooners.
“I don’t know if it possible, but if you could find a spot in the paper for this information, it would help. Some of our guys don’t know of it yet. We are still making calls.”
So there you have it, former Sooners. I’ve attended a couple of these luncheons, and they are a ton of fun. Lots of great stories from glory days gone by.
One of the best things about OU football is the treasuring of the tradition. By historians. By fans. By those who lived it. The best way to keep history fresh and tradition alive is by constant nurturing. These luncheons do exactly that.
