A memorial service for Joe Rector, a Bud Wilkinson-era OU football standout who died Thursday night, will be at 11 a.m., Friday, June 28 at Demuth's Funeral Home in Oklahoma City, located at 1145 W. Britton Road.
In lieu of flowers, the Rector family asks that gifts be sent to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' OU chapter at P.O. Box 721686, Norman, OK 73070.
Rector, who was 76, played at OU from 1955-58. He started two years at end, playing a key role during the Sooners' historic 47-game winning streak. He retired in Oklahoma City after a long career in real estate.
He organized monthly reunions for his old teammates who remained in the Oklahoma City area. Those lunches became an important tradition for Wilkinson-era Sooners.
Jay Wilkinson, one of Bud Wilkinson's sons, said Rector “epitomized all the greatness in the OU tradition.”
“It was just a privilege for me to have known him,” Jay Wilkinson said. “Having been such an exceptional athlete and part of that great tradition, he did his best to maintain the closeness of the former players, and he did it very well.”
