Oklahoma football: More on senior defensive back Kass Everett and his tornado relief efforts

by Jason Kersey Published: September 12, 2013

NORMAN — Oklahoma senior defensive back Kass Everett has come a long way since being dismissed from Delaware’s football squad in early 2011.

I wrote about Everett’s unique college football journey for Thursday’s newspaper. You can read that story here.

But I also wanted to update everyone on Everett’s tornado relief effort. Everett organized a charity drive to benefit Oklahoma tornado victims back in May. He was home in Philadelphia during the storms, but was compelled to do something from afar.

Everett said that once he returned to Norman for summer workouts, his high school — Philadelphia’s Roman Catholic High — took over the effort and sent donated supplies and money to Oklahoma.

“My school handled it when I came back to Oklahoma,” Everett said. “We’ve got a certificate hanging up at my high school.

“I was very relieved that everything worked out.”

* Also, I asked OU coach Bob Stoops about Everett after Wednesday’s practice, but didn’t end up using his quote in Thursday’s story. So here’s Stoops on Everett:

“Kass has been a great member of this team and has contributed a bunch and he’s playing a lot. Some of the formation last week didn’t allow for him to have as many opportunities. He’s got a strong and good role for us and shoot, the few plays he played the other night he went around the corner and forced a fumble. He’s making the most of it for sure.”
