Barry Switzer and Bud Wilkinson each beat Texas nine times as OU head coaches. Bob Stoops can trump them Saturday.
Stoops is 9-5 against the Longhorns and with a victory will set the Sooner record for most wins by a coach in the series. Switzer was 9-5-2 against Texas; Wilkinson was 9-8.
Only Southwest Conference legends Jess Nealy and Matty Bell have beaten the 'Horns more. Nealy went 11-16 against Texas as the Rice coach from 1940-66. Bell went 11-7-2 as the coach at TCU (0-2-1) in 1923-28, Texas A&M (2-2-1) 1929-33 and SMU 1935-41 and 1945-49 (9-3).
TURNOVERS A BIG FACTOR IN OU-TEXAS
Turnovers have been a huge part of the Sooners' recent domination in this series.
In the past three games, which Oklahoma won by a combined 146-58, the Sooners have a plus-8 turnover margin against the Longhorns.
“Coach Stoops always preaches that turnover margin is a huge battle,” cornerback Aaron Colvin said. “We've done a great job of getting turnovers and limiting turnovers as a team. It's definitely paid off and it's been a vital part in this OU-Texas series.”
On the other side, the Sooners have just one turnover in the past three games while forcing four.
The Sooners would've gone three consecutive games without a turnover for just the second time since 1970 if it wasn't for TCU's recovered onside kick in the third quarter Saturday.
MERV JOHNSON'S WIFE DIES
Cindy Johnson, wife of Oklahoma director of football operations Merv Johnson, died Sunday evening after being removed from life support Friday.
The cause of her death was a brain aneurysm.
Merv Johnson has been on Oklahoma's football staff since joining as an assistant coach in 1979. He began serving in his current role, which also includes color commentary on OU radio broadcasts, in 1998.
He didn't miss Oklahoma's home game Saturday against TCU. Oklahoma's official Twitter account sent a tweet just before kickoff, saying, “football is the best therapy for his family tonight.”
STOOPS PUTS ON HAT
At his weekly news conference Monday, Sooners coach Bob Stoops talked with the Gold Hat Trophy to his right.
Stoops was asked if he'd ever put the hat on, like so many of his players have on the field after beating Texas.
“I think I might've had it on for a couple seconds a year to two ago maybe,” Stoops said. “I think it was last year they snuck it on me and I let it go for a minute. I haven't had it on much or for very long.”
The hat was worn in the safety of the locker room.
“I wouldn't have it outside for picture taking,” Stoops said. “No chance of that.”
