Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has remained relatively tight-lipped on the situation concerning linebacker Frank Shannon, saying only that Shannon’s status remained unresolved.
Monday, Stoops gave his greatest indication that the Sooners’ leading tackler in 2013 would not play Saturday against Louisiana Tech in the opener.
First, Shannon was not on the depth chart released Monday morning. Jordan Evans was listed as the starter at Shannon’s normal inside linebacker spot with walk-on Caleb Gastelum as the backup.
Then Stoops was asked about it at his mid-day press conference.
“I’ve got to proceed with players I know are going to be available to me through the rest of the year,” Stoops said. “At this point, the depth chart is as it is.”
Shannon is fighting a one-year suspension from the university that followed a Title IX sexual assault investigation. Shannon was not charged in connection to the incident, which occurred last winter.
SOONERS GOING WITH TRADITIONAL UNIFORM LOOK SATURDAY
Not surprisingly, with the game being televised on pay-per-view, the Sooners will wait to unveil their alternate uniforms.
Stoops said Monday that OU would wear its traditional outfits Saturday.
He also said he hadn’t decided when the team would break out the “Bring The Wood” alternates for the first time.
“I haven’t had much of a plan on that yet,” Stoops said. “I probably should.”
He went on to say OU’s captains along with athletic director Joe Castiglione would be the ones making that decision when it happens.
The Sooners announced quarterback Trevor Knight, offensive tackle Daryl Williams, cornerback Julian Wilson, defensive end Chuka Ndulue, linebacker Eric Striker and kicker Michael Hunnicutt as captains Monday.
CASTIGLIONE, SWITZER, KEITH TAKE ‘ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE’
At last Thursday’s practice that was open to students and media, Stoops challenged Castiglione, Barry Switzer and Toby Keith to take the “Ice Bucket Challenge” to raise money and awareness for ALS.
