Oklahoma football notebook: 'Judgment calls' go Sooners' way

Saturday, the Sooners were beneficiaries of a few of those.

In the third quarter, OU defensive end R.J. Washington hit TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin, who lost control of the ball. It was recovered by linebacker Frank Shannon, who returned it inside the Horned Frogs' 10-yard line.

But officials called the play an incomplete pass; upon review, though, the call was overturned.

“I had a great discussion with the referee on my sideline,” Stoops said. “We were laughing. I said, ‘I'm tellin ya, I haven't gotten one of those all year. We're getting it today. You watch.' Sure enough, that's what happened.”

Then just a few plays into the fourth quarter, with Oklahoma leading 24-14, TCU kicker Jaden Oberkrom's 32-yard field-goal attempt was ruled no good.

But television replays showed that the ball might've actually sailed just above the uprights, and barely inside the right one.

Field-goal attempts are not reviewable if the ball is kicked higher than the uprights.

Finally, with under a minute remaining in the game, Boykin ran for a 12-yard touchdown that would have tied the game; guard Blaize Foltz, though, was called for holding.

“We've been on the other side of so many of those, so many that were not called,” Stoops said. “Fortunately, they saw it and called it.”

STILLS SHUT DOWN

Junior Kenny Stills remains Oklahoma's season leader in both catches and receiving yards, but was held Saturday to season lows in the categories.

He only caught two passes for 16 yards against TCU, and both grabs came in the second half.

Credit junior cornerback Jason Verrett; the standout Horned Frogs defensive back was locked on Stills the entire game.

“It makes it a lot easier when you only have to defend 10 guys,” said TCU safety Sam Carter. “Jason's a great player and he was working all summer, and he'll be even better next year.”
