But other than that, Williams was pretty well stuffed by the Mountaineers' run defense, even though the Sooners went on to win 50-49.

Williams finished Saturday's game with 92 yards on 22 carries, averaging 4.2 yards per rush.

Take away the 48-yard burst, and his average drops to 2.1.

Over the first several games of the season, Williams was developing a propensity for breakaway touchdowns. He scored on runs of 65, 89 and 95 yards in the Sooners' first five games.

Since then, though — until Saturday — he hadn't rushed for more than 17 yards in one play.

LATE TIMEOUT PRESERVES A PLAY

On Oklahoma's second-to-last drive of Saturday's 50-49 victory on Mountaineer Field, Landry Jones was saved by a timeout.

On second-and-10 at the Sooners' 37, Jones was under pressure and forced to throw the ball away. But officials announced that a timeout had been called by OU before the play, meaning it was still second down.

After the timeout, Jones found Sterling Shepard for a 29-yard gain; four plays later, Jones hit Kenny Stills for an 8-yard touchdown that put the Sooners back on top with 4:10 left.

Scott Rotruck was thrilled when West Virginia joined the Big 12 Conference because of what it meant for his alma mater's athletic programs.

But the conference change was also a welcome change for Rotruck personally and professionally; he is Chesapeake Energy's vice president of corporate development and state government relations, and travels regularly from his home in Morgantown to corporate headquarters in Oklahoma City.

“I'm very, very pleased we got to join the Big 12,” Rotruck said before Saturday night's OU-West Virginia game on Mountaineer field.

“But for me personally, it's wonderful. We're getting into some new rivalries, but not only new rivalries, but new friendships. There are new opportunities to conduct business from place to place.”
