Even in holding Kansas without a point against his first-team defense, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops wasn't pleased with the way the unit played after the Sooners' 52-7 win over the Jayhawks.
“I thought our tackling was kind of iffy most of the night,” he said. “We played well but I don't think we were overly sharp.”
Stoops said the Sooners got away with things that better offenses could take advantage of later in the season.
“I thought they got position on us by one of the tight ends and couldn't take advantage of it,” he said.
Stoops was plenty pleased, though, with his defense forcing three turnovers.
After OU had just one takeaway in its first three games, the Sooners have nine in their next three.
“It's critical and crucial to your defense,” Stoops said. “That tells you some of our players are becoming better playmakers over the course of the season.”
GAMEDAY HEADED TO NORMAN
ESPN's College GameDay will be in Norman next weekend for the Top 10 showdown between Notre Dame and Oklahoma.
GameDay visited the OU-Texas game last year in Dallas where Lee Corso picked the Sooners to win. Next Saturday's game will be the seventh time the GameDay crew has visited Norman.
Chris Fowler, Desmond Howard, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Samantha Steele also visited Notre Dame on Oct. 13 when the Irish beat Stanford in overtime.
The game kicks off at 7 p.m.
JEFFERSON LOOKING FORWARD TO CHALLENGE
Sooners safety Tony Jefferson will have to go head-to-head with Notre Dame's offense next week, but that doesn't mean he isn't thinking about the matchup with the Fighting Irish's defense.
Through seven games, Notre Dame has yet to allow a rushing touchdown, keeping three opponents out of the end zone completely.
“They've got all the talk about who's got the best defense in the country,” Jefferson said. “You hear all about them and how they haven't given up a rushing touchdown. Next week, we get to see who's got the best defense. We look forward to the challenge.”
Jefferson had eight tackles in the first quarter and finished with 11 tackles overall to lead the Sooners.
