Oklahoma football notebook: Sooners' RB Damien Williams makes strong return

Williams ran for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns and returned to the starting lineup in the Sooners' 42-34 win over the Bears on Saturday.

With the roaring winds in Norman, it was important for the Sooners to be successful on the ground.

The Sooners scored four of their six touchdowns on the ground and ran for 183 yards total.

While OU coach Bob Stoops praised the offensive balance afterward, Williams' fumble on the Sooners' first offensive play of the second half drew his ire.

“Maybe the one disappointment is probably the fumble,” Stoops said. “You've got momentum, you've got great field position, you've got a chance to really separate a little bit and we give them, on the first play, we give them the ball right back.”

Baylor didn't score on the ensuing drive but scored a few minutes later after another Sooners turnover, this time an interception.

STOOPS PASSES WILKINSON

The win was No. 146 for Stoops, putting him past legendary Bud Wilkinson for second in school history, behind only Barry Switzer.

“What coach Wilkinson did is absolutely amazing,” Stoops said. “The win streak is just really incredible. I don't believe it will ever be touched again. The national championships, the sustained success for so long.

“I don't look at numbers. It's not me. I'm a long way from sitting in a rocking chair and reflecting on it.”

Stoops figures to get a chance to catch Switzer next season. Switzer won 157 games during his time as head coach.

CLAY STAYS STRONG

A week after running for a career-best 157 yards against Iowa State, Brennan Clay didn't get close to matching that performance.

Still, though, Clay came up with some crucial plays both offensively and on special teams.

He scored twice in the first quarter, once on a run and the other on his first touchdown reception of his career.

His biggest play, though, might've come on special teams late in the first half.

With just 32 seconds to go in the half, Baylor scored to pull within four, 21-17.
