Projecting the 2014 college football season for the Oklahoma Sooners:

MVP: Trevor Knight. Unless Baker Mayfield gets eligible, the Sooners are unproven at quarterback behind Knight.

Best player: Sterling Shepard. The Sooners are surprisingly starless, but Shepard is a proven playmaker.

Most overlooked: Charles Tapper. Eric Striker and Geneo Grissom stole the show with their pass-rushing exploits in the Sugar Bowl, but Tapper is an all-around star at defensive end.

Best newcomer: Samaje Perine. With Joe Mixon’s off-field issues, the other freshman tailback has the chance to shine.

Biggest game: Baylor in Norman, Nov. 8. The presumptive Big 12 title game.

Best win: Other than Baylor, getting Charlie Strong off to a losing start in OU-Texas would be fine.

Trap game: at Texas Tech on Nov. 15. The Latin word for “trap game” is Lubbock.

Record: 11-2.

Post season projection: Sugar Bowl, semifinal vs. Florida State.

(Editor's Note: This column has been edited to reflect the NCAA denying a waiver request for Oklahoma receiver Dorial Green-Beckham.)
