“It's a lot different playing out on the perimeter than it is playing in the backfield, but he's got athletic ability and quickness and explosiveness, and those are all important things that we want to play at the receiver position,” Norvell said.

Norvell said Finch is working with both backs and receivers in practice.

“He's one of our better players,” Norvell said. “We're just trying to expand his role a little bit and give him an opportunity to get on the field at different spots, and that helps our flexibility in being able to play with different guys on and off the field.”

Norvell was later asked if coaches have begun deciding who the first-team receivers will be for the season opener.

“Nope; we're playing about eight guys right now,” Norvell said. “We'll find out as we go who ends up going where.”

Based on coaches comments, it appears senior Justin Brown and freshman Trey Metoyer are leading candidates to start as outside receivers, with junior Kenny Stills starting in the slot.

“We don't have any kind of depth chart at this point,” Norvell said. “We'll just keep working until we play a ballgame.”

HEUPEL: BACKUP QB DECISION MIGHT COME SOON

After sophomore Blake Bell's impressive scrimmage Saturday, coaches faced more questions Tuesday regarding a time frame for a decision in the race to be Landry Jones' backup quarterback.

Bob Stoops quickly dismissed one inquiry about the competition between Bell and junior Drew Allen, but co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel implied a decision might be coming soon.
