NORMAN — It's official: Oklahoma and Nebraska will renew their historic football rivalry with a home-and-home series, scheduled for the Sept. 18, 2021 in Norman and Sept. 17, 2022 in Lincoln, Neb.

OU confirmed the series in a release Thursday afternoon, but outgoing Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne told the Omaha World-Herald three weeks ago that the series was agreed to “in principle.”

Osborne said then that scheduling an Oklahoma series was a goal he wanted to achieve before stepping down.

“Classic rivalries like Oklahoma-Nebraska are part of college football's historic fabric,” said OU athletics director Joe Castiglione.

“The ability to rekindle a fabled series between two tradition-rich programs and two extremely loyal and passionate fan bases was very important to both universities.”

Owen Field is the planned site for the first game, which was scheduled to coincide with the 50th anniversary of 1971's “Game of the Century,” won 35-31 by Nebraska in Norman.

That year, Osborne and Barry Switzer were offensive coordinators at Nebraska and Oklahoma, respectively.
