Oklahoma football: Sooner senior Gabe Ikard likely to miss rest of spring practices with broken hand

NORMAN — Senior center Gabe Ikard will likely miss the remainder of Oklahoma's spring football practices with a broken hand, according to a source close to Ikard.

Ikard injured his hand during the Sooners' first spring practice Sunday, March 10.

The source said Ikard initially believed he'd broken the ring finger on his snapping hand — which he fractured during Oklahoma's 2011 home win over Tulsa — but an X-ray revealed a displaced fracture near the base of his middle finger.

Ikard, who has started 37 career games on the offensive line, played high school football at Bishop McGuinness, and originally signed with OU as a tight end.

He started 12 games at left guard as a redshirt freshman, and started all 13 games his sophomore season, splitting time between guard and center.

Just before the beginning of last season, center Ben Habern chose to end his career because of lingering neck and back issues, causing Ikard to move to the position full time.

He missed the Sooners' Nov. 10 home win over Baylor with a concussion. Ty Darlington started the game in Ikard's place and played well.

Then, in the regular-season finale at TCU and the Cotton Bowl, Ikard shifted to guard while Adam Shead fought through nagging injuries, and Darlington saw significant playing time.

Darlington and senior Austin Woods — the team's long snapper — have split time with the first-team offense this spring during Ikard's absence, first-year offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh said.
