— Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops wasn’t asked about Samaje Perine much last week at Big 12 Media Days in Dallas.

That didn’t stop Stoops from talking plenty about the Sooners’ “other” freshman running back.

Every time Stoops was asked about freshman five-star running back Joe Mixon, Stoops would spend as much or more time talking about the less-hyped Perine.

A couple days later, running backs coach Cale Gundy was the same way, heaping praise on the four-star running back from Pflugerville, Texas.

Now, with Mixon under investigation for assault following an incident in Norman early Friday morning and practice beginning in a week, the talk about Perine takes on a different tone.

“Samaje Perine’s an incredibly physical, powerful young guy at running back,” Stoops said. “He’s had a great summer in the way he’s trained. (I’m) impressed all the older guys are talking about him and how competitive and how physical he is and he’s got excellent speed with it.”

Gundy was asked about Mixon, pivoted to Perine, then asked about Mixon again.

Once again, the talked turned to Perine.

“Everybody talks about Joe, but Samaje, the first day that he tested, he lifted 275 20 times,” Gundy said. “He steps in initially as one of the strongest players we have on our team as an 18-year-old young man, who also broad jumped over 10 feet and vertical’d over 35 inches. His cone drill was exceptional. His 40-yard dash was exceptional.”
