According to Big 12 rules, Oklahoma did clinch its eighth Big 12 and 44th overall conference championship with Saturday's win.

During the celebration on the Amon G. Carter Stadium field, though, the Sooners were still hours from finding out if their title was outright or shared with a Kansas State team that beat them in Norman.

The Wildcats hosted Texas later Saturday; with a win, Kansas State and Oklahoma would share the conference title because of their identical 8-1 Big 12 records, despite KSU's 24-19 win Sept. 22 at OU.

“I didn't make the rules on how the league was set up. Right?” OU coach Bob Stoops said when asked about the possibility of a shared title. “Nor did you. Just read what they say about the rules. There's been a lot of 10-team leagues through the years. It didn't just start happening this year.”

Senior cornerback Demontre Hurst said after the game that he'd be proud to call his team a conference champion, regardless of what happened between Kansas State and Texas.

“I think we earned our right,” Hurst said. “We only lost one conference game to K-State. They beat us fair and square, but we took care of everybody else.

“I'm proud to say we're Big 12 champs, and if they win or lose, we're still Big 12 champs no matter what.”
