NORMAN — Saturday afternoon, as Oklahoma players and coaches were getting pictures taken on the field at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Sooners co-offensive coordinator Josh Heupel yelled out to Blake Bell.

Heupel asked the quarterback-turned-tight end if he wanted to get in the quarterback picture “for old time’s sake.”

Bell shook his head.

“I’m loving where I’m at,” he told Heupel.

The senior is happy with the change, though it wasn’t an easy process.

It wasn’t easy to decide before the Sugar Bowl to ask to make the switch despite the success he’d had at quarterback.

Bell contemplated staying at quarterback. He contemplated transferring.

“It’s tough,” Bell said. “But we thought long and hard about it, my family and stuff. We just kept thinking the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. You’ve got to remember that, too.

“I’ve played here four years. I wanted to play here for my fifth, finish here, leave my legacy here.”

He was also thinking about his future beyond Norman.

“In the NFL, I think I’ve got a better chance at tight end than I did at quarterback,” Bell said.

The change involved a shift in how Bell prepared over the summer.

He didn’t have to stay away from putting too much strain on his throwing arm and shoulders.

“The coaches and strength coaches did a great job of kind of getting me a little bit bulkier,” Bell said. “I wanted to kind of thin down a little bit, too, lose some body fat and not really lose much weight.”
