Oklahoma football: Tulsa Union's Carson Meier should provide OU a boost at tight end

SUPER 30 — Carson Meier caught 15 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns last season, then averaged 12.2 points per game for the Redskins' state-tournament basketball team. About a month after basketball season ended, Meier's college football recruitment began to take off.

— Carson Meier became Oklahoma's first tight end commitment in nearly 16 months on May 22, when the Tulsa Union standout gave the Sooners his pledge.

The senior-to-be's commitment gave OU a boost at the position, which became largely obsolete last season for the first time in the Bob Stoops era.

“I feel like it's an opportunity,” Meier said. “I have dreams of going to the NFL, and OU's a great college football school. I hope they can make my dreams come true.”

The 6-foot-7, 220-pound tight end is No. 9 on The Oklahoman's Super 30 list of the state's top 2014 college football prospects.

Meier caught 15 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns last season, then averaged 12.2 points per game for the Redskins' state-tournament basketball team. About a month after basketball season ended, Meier's college football recruitment began to take off.

He picked up his first offer from Oregon State on April 11, then added offers from Duke, Rice, Rutgers, SMU, Washington State and Wisconsin.

Oklahoma extended an offer to Meier on May 16, and it took the three-star prospect less than a week to commit.

“I'm excited about his opportunity to go in and be part of a place that has had great tight ends,” said Union coach Kirk Fridrich. “He's really just an overgrown receiver, and that's a rarity. There's not very many kids that way. Carson's one of those special kids who's rangy.”
