Oklahoma football: What Tulsa Union's Jeffery Mead has in common with OU's other recent receiver commitments

— Tulsa Union's Jeffery Mead represents a continuing trend for new Oklahoma wide receiver commitments.

Mead, who is No. 7 on The Oklahoman's Super 30 list of the state's top 2014 college football prospects, stands at 6-foot-6 and on June 22 became the latest tall wide receiver to verbally commit to the Sooners.

Dannon Cavil (6-5, 205 pounds) signed as part of the Sooners' 2013 recruiting class and enrolled early. He already made a big impression throughout spring practices and could be in line for playing time as a true freshman.

Then in April, four-star receiver prospect Dallis Todd (6-5, 205 pounds) committed to Oklahoma for its 2014 class.

“Of course, when you're stretching out the field and you've got someone my height running the long route, the deep threat is always there,” Mead said.

Mead caught 33 passes for 614 yards and seven touchdowns last season for Tulsa Union. Coach Kirk Fridrich said the senior-to-be hasn't even begun to tap his impressive potential yet.

“If you're a quarterback, there's nothing better than having a receiver that is rangy and has such a large radius,” Fridrich said. “And not just on fade routes, but also throwing a slant route to a guy that has about an 8-foot radius.

“There's a philosophy out there with big receivers right now. You want them to be fast, but the corner's not gonna outrun the receiver. He's gonna stay with him. If you're side by side, obviously size will give you a big advantage.”

Mead was the Sooners' second 2014 commitment from Tulsa Union, joining his good friend Carson Meier, a 6-foot-7 tight end who adds another tall weapon to OU's future teams.
