Taking a tour of Notre Dame Stadium on Tuesday, one of the guides found out we were from Oklahoma.

“I remember when Bud Wilkinson would come here and kick the crap out of us,” the guide said. “I thought, ‘Geez, Bud, are you ever going to get old enough to retire?’”

The intersection of History Boulevard and Memory Lane can be quite the place.

The Sooners have beaten Notre Dame all of once. Ever. And Wilkinson was 40 years old when OU got that lone victory, 1956.

Of course, give the tour guide a break. The lone victory was quite a show

OU beat the Irish 40-0 in South Bend, with Clendon Thomas and Jerry Tubbs and Tommy McDonald dominating. Paul Hornung would go on to win the Heisman Trophy that season for a Notre Dame team that finished 2-8, but the Sooners were the stars that day.

OU and Notre Dame renew their series Saturday in South Bend, and to commemorate the rivalry, newsok.com videographers Damon Fontenot and Tim Money have produced a four-part series. Today’s offering: What it’s like for the Sooners to beat the Irish.

We talked to three players from the 1956 OU team – Thomas, Jakie Sandefer and Chuck Bowman – about that day when the Sooners posted their only conquest of Notre Dame.

Here’s the video:
