Oklahoma football: Will Sooners meet Florida State in College Football Playoff?

by Jason Kersey Published: January 7, 2014

— Defending national champion Florida State will open the 2014 season against Oklahoma State at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Might the Seminoles end the season in the same venue against the Cowboys' Bedlam rival?

Based on Oklahoma's convincing Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama and the high expectations for the Sooners and Seminoles entering 2014, it certainly seems plausible.

Florida State returns Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston, and will enter 2014 a strong favorite to repeat as national champion.

The Sooners should also begin next season highly ranked, with most of their defensive starters back and quarterback Trevor Knight returning for his sophomore season.

Knight completed 32 of 44 pass attempts for 348 yards and four touchdowns against Alabama, earning him Sugar Bowl MVP honors..

Several early 2014 preseason rankings were released Tuesday morning, with most placing Oklahoma in the top 10. NBC's College Football Talk ranked the Sooners fourth, behind Ohio State, Oregon and Auburn.

The Bowl Championship Series will be replaced next season by a four-team College Football Playoff, with its inaugural championship game being played at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

A selection committee will choose the four best teams and place them in the semifinals, which will be held at the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl next season.

Oklahoma and Florida State, of course, have met before to determine college football's national champion. The Sooners beat FSU 13-2 in the Orange Bowl to claim the 2000 title in Bob Stoops' second season at Oklahoma.
