Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. has won another award from an industry group for its help to other utilities during major storms, the utility said Friday.
The Edison Electric Institute, a trade group, awarded OG&E the Energy Assistance Award for the fifth time. The utility was just one of two that won the award for helping during three major storms in 2012.
“OG&E's restoration assistance following the Super Derecho, Hurricane Isaac and Hurricane Sandy was truly remarkable,” Edison Electric Institute President Tom Kuhn said in a statement. “Getting the lights back on quickly and safely following a major storm is never easy.”
OG&E said its crews spent 35 days on the road, drove more than 322,000 miles and worked more than 34,000 hours to restore electricity in the wake of those severe storms. The utility is a member of the Southeast Electric Exchange, a mutual-aid service whose members dispatch crews to help restore power during storms. Utilities receiving help typically provide lodging, meals and other services to visiting crews.
“We're honored by the outpouring of thanks from the affected utilities and customers,” said Mike Mathews, OG&E's vice president of power delivery operations. “Teaming up to help people in need is something OG&E is proud to do. Our crews restored power after the storms efficiently and safely, without a single injury.”
In December, officials in Glen Rock, N.J., temporarily renamed their town “Oklahoma G&E” in honor of OG&E crews who helped restore power after October's Hurricane Sandy. The town is about 20 miles west of New York City.
