Oklahoma GOP congressional candidates Lankford, Calvey begin appealing to voters
The two 5th Congressional District hopefuls will meet in a runoff next month and the winner will face Billy Coyle and two independents in November.
WASHINGTON — Just hours after securing a place in the Republican runoff for Oklahoma City's congressional seat, James Lankford was offering a tutorial on his website about his Facebook page.
By then, several messages had been sent to supporters through his Twitter account.
"The runoff election is under way!" said one message from the candidate who has put a premium on social media throughout his campaign.
Kevin Calvey, who finished just behind Lankford on Tuesday night and will face him in the Aug. 24 runoff, also began the four-week campaign in earnest Wednesday.
Calvey said it wasn't just a ground war to get voters to the polls.
"We will be putting substantial ads up (on television)," Calvey said. "But certainly we will continue our strong direct voter contact effort on the doors and with personal volunteer phone calls."
