Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin requests audit of Oklahoma Veterans Affairs

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Gov. Mary Fallin has requested an operational audit of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs following the resignation of the agency's longtime executive director.

Fallin sent a formal request Monday to Auditor and Inspector Gary Jones to audit the agency and review its management efficiency.

Executive Director Martha Spear announced her resignation last week following reports by The Journal Record newspaper and the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority about cases involving deaths and abuse of veterans at state facilities.

Reports of abuse first aired in May and Fallin then replaced eight of the nine members of the War Veterans Commission, which oversees the agency. She said she hoped the changes would lead to a “change in direction.”

A message left Monday with the agency's interim deputy director wasn't immediately returned.
