Oklahoma House of Representatives approves education studies, rejects few

The Oklahoma House of Representatives announced the 68 studies that will be conducted this year Friday. I’ve listed the number, topic and corresponding representatives.

Nine studies fall under the Common Education Committee:

  • 13-017: Storm shelters in schools. (Ann Coody, R-Lawton; Todd Thomsen, R-Ada)
  • 13-025: Whether to require secondary students to receive CPR training. (Emily Virgin, D-Norman)
  • 13-045: The number, need and efficiency of state exams. (Gus Blackwell, R-Laverne)
  • 13-051: Placement of students with disabilities who exhibit dangerous behaviors. (Ann Coody, R-Lawton)
  • 13-065: How high-stakes testing affects special-needs students. (Jadine Nollan, R-Sand Springs)
  • 13-066: Exploring alternative routes for students to earn high school diplomas. (Jadine Nollan, R-Sand Springs)
  • 13-071: How students information is shared among school districts and the state Education Department. (David Brumbaugh, R-Broken Arrow; Jason Nelson, R-Oklahoma City; Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City; Jason Murphey, R-Guthrie; Sen. Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City; Dan Fisher, R-El Reno; Seneca Scott, D-Tulsa; Ken Walker, R-Tulsa; Mike Turner, R-Edmond)
  • 13-107: The costs and benefits of expanding the school year at all schools, like Oklahoma City Public Schools has done in recent years. (David Perryman, D-Chickasha)
  • 13-114: Looking for best practices for teaching children in kindergarten through third-grade to read. (Gus Blackwell, R-Laverne)

Two fall under the Higher Education Committee:

  • 13-034: Comparing administrative costs to student outcomes. (T.W. Shannon, R-Lawton)
  • 13-074: How to reduce or maintain college costs. (Harold Wright, R-Weatherford)

A couple of other education-related studies were given the red light:

  • 13-077: The pros and cons of online versus traditional brick-and-mortar schools. (Ed Cannaday, D-Porum)
  • 13-093: Recruitment and retention strategies for school psychologists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists. (Mike Shelton, D-Oklahoma City; Ed Cannady, D-Porum; Donnie Condit, D-McAlester)
