OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma doctors would be forced to offer women a chance to listen a fetal heartbeat before performing an abortion under a bill that is heading to the governor's desk.
The House voted 75-12 on Thursday for the Heartbeat Informed Consent Act over the objection of some members who accused Republicans of playing politics with the issue of abortion. Meanwhile, a bill to grant personhood rights to a fertilized human egg remains in a House committee.
Grove Republican Doug Cox, one of two medical doctors in the House, says he's concerned with language in the bill that gives broader ability to family members of the patient to sue abortion providers. He said his colleagues were “beating a dead horse” with the abortion issue.
